Under Kentucky law, KRS 515.030 defines Robbery in the Second Degree as follows:
(1) A person is guilty of robbery in the second degree when, in the course of committing a theft, he uses or threatens the immediate use of physical force upon another person with intent to accomplish the theft.
(2) Robbery in the second degree is a Class C felony punishable by 5 to 10 years in the penitentiary.
Under Kentucky law, KRS 515.020 defines Robbery in the First Degree as follows:
(1) A person is guilty of robbery in the first degree when, in the course of committing a theft, he uses or threatens the immediate use of physical force upon another person with intent to accomplish the theft and when he:
(a) Causes physical injury; or (b) Is armed with a deadly weapon; or (c) Uses or threatens the immediate use of a dangerous instrument upon any person who is not a participant in the crime.
(2) Robbery in the first degree is a Class B felony punishable by 10 to 20 years in the penitentiary.
The LMPD Robbery Unit only investigates robberies which occur to armored cars, employees robbed while making bank deposits for a commercial business and robberies that occur on the premises of permanently-established commercial businesses (including financial institutions) in which the business cash, narcotics or merchandise is the target of the underlying theft.

Street robberies, home invasions, carjackings, and robberies in which the victim of the crime is an individual or delivery driver are all investigated by detectives within each division.
